Discover Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton Township, NJ

If you find yourself driving down 295 South, near exit 65, you’d have to try to miss the large statue of two heads. It’s an art piece called Head 2 Head by John Martini, and it’s part of a collection of art pieces placed around Hamilton Township.

The group behind this 28ft tall behemoth is called Grounds for Sculpture – and its one of many from their collection “Sculptures On The Way.” Following the breadcrumbs of this and other statues scattered around Hamilton Township will lead you to a quaint park nestled between Warner Village and Mercerville (still within Hamilton), where you’ll find tons of other brilliant pieces scattered about their 42 acre property.

Explore the Art Collection at Grounds for Sculpture

Formerly a racetrack, founder Seward Johnson opened the New Jersey attraction in 1992 and has since added over 300 sculptures, 2,000 trees (of 100 different varieties) and endless treasures to explore. There are many art pieces hidden around the facility, and you’ll find new details every time you visit. Not including the numerous, almost microscopic attentions to detail, certain exhibits and events rotate on a seasonal basis, to ensure there’s always something fresh for your palette. Plant enthusiasts, art enjoyers, and photography fans will all find something to enjoy.

Hidden Gems and Unique Sculptures

There’s a large array of art styles, ranging from abstract and modern to almost lifelike. Seward himself was a fan of capturing people in the moment, accounting for 34+ pieces alone.

An example of one of his hidden details is called “Hell, Time to Go Fishing” and it’s tucked on the far edge of the property by the outer fence. You can spot him outside from the intersection at Sculptors Way and Nottingham Way, or through a not-so-clearly marked path within the park. It’s a self portrait of the late Seward himself drinking a Coca Cola while cutting the lawn!

The park also has an on premises restaurant called Rat’s, inspired by the 1908 children’s book The Wind in the Willows. The French dining experience overlooks a lake, and features a beautiful walkway joining it to the rest of the park. Dripping with atmosphere, the park makes for a fantastic date spot, or a nice day out with the kids.
